Highway 1 lanes have reopened in both directions after a vehicle crash caused closures on Tuesday (May 21).

The transportation ministry said just before 11 a.m. that the vehicle incident between Helmcken Road and McKenzie Avenue blocked the left lane in both directions and that crews were on scene.

The ministry asked people to pass with caution and expect delays. Traffic in the area was still backed up around noon.

West Shore RCMP said its officers were responding to a single-vehicle crash on the highway near the Helmcken Road off ramp.

“South bound traffic is down to one lane for the next little bit as police and other emergency personnel attend the scene,” police said shortly before noon.

Emcon, a road maintenance contractor for the South Island, put out a warning that wet roads don’t make for ideal driving conditions as steady showers hit Greater Victoria on Tuesday morning.

“Many vehicle incidents can be avoided by simply planning ahead, being alert and watching your speed,” Emcon said.
