A nonprofit group that delivers pet food to shelters and families in need is asking for donations after more than 50 bags of pet food were stolen.

Victoria Pet Food Bank president Margarita Dominguez said the break-in was discovered Wednesday after someone broke into a supply shed, near the Sooke Skate Park.

Dominguez said 50 bags of 33 pounds of dog food and eight bags of cat food were taken.

“It was heartbreaking. It brought me to tears,” she said.

The shed was used to stockpile pet food, so the group is not entirely out of food. Still, the Victoria Pet Food Bank is asking for the public’s help in helping it replenish its supply and catching whoever is responsible.

The food bank delivers pet food to more than 30 needy families in Sooke.

“There could be someone selling it,” Dominguez said. “With that amount, I wouldn’t think that’s something someone needs, that’s someone who is selling it on the streets to make money.”

Pet food donations can be made at Village Foods or Whiskers and Wags or by calling 778-352-2999.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 250-642-5241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
