Bridge construction prompts Gillespie Road closure in East Sooke

The closure begins July 22 and ends Aug. 2.

Provincial Transportation Ministry officials are warning motorists to plan for alternative routes due to a 1½-week-long closure of Gillespie Road at Roche Cove for bridge construction.

The closure begins Sunday, July 22 and ends Thursday, Aug. 2. The road will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to install the piles for the new Gillespie Road bridge.

Gillespie Road will not be closed Friday and Saturday, but traffic signal controlled single lane alternating traffic will be in effect.

The road will be closed at the Roche Cove Park parking lot on the North side and at the mailbox pullout on the south.

Alternate routes available via East Sooke, Rocky Point, Kangaroo or Happy Valley roads.

In January, the province announced $10-million in improvements to Sooke Road, including a new two-lane bridge on Gillespie Road, bus pullouts, a bus-queue jump lane, new safety signs, a slow moving vehicle pull out, and a rest area.
