King Creek wildfire near Sooke ‘under control’

An initial attack crew remains on the scene.

A wildfire that started Monday at King Creek northwest of Sooke is now considered to be “under control.”

The fire, approximately a quarter of a hectare in size, was reported before 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 28, said B.C. Wildfire Service officials.

An initial attack crew remains on the scene.

The suspected cause of the fire is lightning.

Earlier this summer, a wildfire near Tugwell Creek burned about 1.85 hectares. The fire was caused by human activity.

No evacuation orders or alerts connected with the King Creek or Tugwell Creek fires were necessary.

The fire comes amid a devastating season in the province in which more than 1.5 million hectares have been scorched since April.

There are 418 wildfires burning in B.C., including 187 classified as out-of-control and 12 “wildfires of note,” meaning they’re highly visible or threaten public safety.
