Sooke has opened a purpose-built rental building at 2170 Charters Rd. with 75 below-market homes for Indigenous families, elders, and individuals, taking a significant stride towards addressing housing disparities.

The four-storey apartment complex introduces a mix of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom units, with 13 units specifically designated for low-income individuals.

“This opening provides peace of mind and hope for families and individuals struggling to make ends meet,” said B.C. Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon, adding the project’s aim to offer safe shelter and facilitate active community participation without high rent burdens.

The collaboration involved B.C. Housing, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Capital Regional District, and M’akola Housing Society.

The M’akola Housing Society will manage the building, prioritizing Indigenous individuals, seniors, and families while welcoming non-Indigenous residents. The move-in process for residents started in October, marking a significant step toward addressing the pressing need for affordable Indigenous housing in the area.

“The availability of Indigenous affordable housing is crucial for the well-being of families and communities. It provides a sense of security and stability, which is essential for people and communities to thrive,” said Kevin Albers, M’akola Housing Society’s chief executive officer.

Mayor Maja Tait lauded the provincial government and M’akola Housing Society for their aid and stressed their responsiveness to Sooke’s requirements.

Tait highlighted the project’s broader impact, acknowledging its contribution to creating pedestrian corridors that benefit the entire community, not just its residents.
