Sooke council approved a district staff recommendations Monday night to award two contracts worth more than $10 million to Hazelwood Construction Services for the Charters Road corridor and Church Road roundabout.

The Charters Corridor is a multi-faceted project that addresses the increasing transportation needs along Charters Road, from Throup Road to Highway 14. The goal is to alleviate traffic congestion for those travelling towards Sooke in the westbound direction.

This phase of the contract is $6,287,977 for work from Throup Road to Golledge Avenue.

The contract for the Church Road roundabout is $3,797,631.

The Church Road and Throup Road intersection requires the implementation of a roundabout to boost safety, enhance sightlines, and rectify existing issues related to its layout and slopes.

The project aims to handle the growing flow of pedestrians and vehicles, not only from the Throup Road link to Phillips Road but also from the surrounding developments in the area.

Construction of the roundabout begins this fall followed by work on the corridor in January. Both projects will be completed in 2024.
