In Loving Memory ~

On January 29th, 2024 Helge Vedel Jensen passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side.

Helge is survived by his son Nicholas, daughter Maja (Alexander), and his beloved grandson Ewan. As well, he leaves behind his brothers Karljohan and Knud Vedel in Denmark and brother Arne Jensen in Calgary and their families.

Helge was born to parents Gunner and Marie in Taarnborg, Denmark. He immigrated to Calgary, Alberta in 1968 where he met and married Shigeko Arikawa (passed on December 8, 2019).

Together they raised their children in the hamlet of Bragg Creek, Alberta where Helge held a trade in construction that would have him travelling all over Alberta, Yukon and the North West Territories on various contracts.

Helge enjoyed hiking, fishing and exploring Bragg Creek and Kananaskis Country, attending church services where he sang in the choir and volunteered with the Bragg Creek Lions Club and Scouts Canada.

Helge and Shigeko moved to Sooke in 2004 and here he greatly enjoyed walking (or being walked by)his dog Finnegan, chatting with neighbours and puttering about his home and garden. He enjoyed attending church, serving with the Sooke Lions Club and exploring the trails with family and friends.

After Shigeko's passing, Helge lived with his family and loved watching his grandson Ewan grow and get into mischief. He enjoyed gathering with friends and family over meals, where they would toast each other's health and have a laugh.

While Helge lived with cancer for nearly 10 years, endured rounds of radiation, cardiac failure, multiple hospital stays, he was always cheerful with a positive attitude. A sincere thank you to all of Helge's care providers including Dr Vally (for never quitting on him), Christine Richter and Pastor Rick Eby.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 15th at 2 pm at the Sooke Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sooke Gathering Place via the Sooke Region Communities Health Network.
