LETTER: Cell towers in your backyard

Many neighbourhoods in Sooke are dealing with applications for cell towers

Sooke landowners are tempted by Freedom Mobile to place a cell Tower antenna on their property and get $15,000 a year.

They are reassured by Health Canada they are safe if you are more than 150 metres away.

However, there’s research that you need to be 500 metres from towers to avoid radio frequency radiation with its related illnesses.

Many neighbourhoods in Sooke are dealing with applications for cell towers. However, you only get notified of meetings or opportunity for input from the District of Sooke if you are within 150 metres of the proposed antenna.

We recently visited a friend from years ago and she was looking much older and very frail. We found out she is suffering from electro-hyper-sensitivity or Rapid Aging Syndrome due to radio frequency radiation. We had never heard of it!

We then get a letter in the mail about a cell tower application within 150 metres of our property.

We must listen to the research in this field and stand up for our health.

The mayor of Colwood is listening to Triangle Mountain residents who have health issues from all the antennae on the mountain.

If the health issues do not alarm you, you need to know that the value of properties in some areas has decreased due to nearby antennas.

Even if you are waiting for Health Canada to change its guidelines why would you put your family and neighbours at risk of RF radiation illnesses?

We have been invited to write concerns to the Sooke District and go to the committee-of-the-whole meeting on June 19 at in the Sooke Council Chambers. As a community, we have to work together to update Sooke’s communication antenna policy.
