LETTERS: Monarchy holds little relevancy today

I too applaud Coun. Tony St-Pierre’s decision not to pledge allegiance to the Queen.

The monarchy is an antiquated institution which holds little relevance to society today. Why would you swear an oath to someone merely born into a position of great wealth and privilege?

It’s time Canada had a head of state not tied to the apron strings of a country with a, quite often, terrible colonial history.

I can understand how St-Pierre, a Metis like me, would have a difficult time honouring someone who represents a long line of predatory actions.

It’s more meaningful that St-Pierre, who cares about protecting the rural environment and managing growth, pledge an oath to fulfilling his campaign promises rather than honouring an old lady, thousands of kilometres away.
