The Sooke Thunderbirds hockey team is competing in the Bantam A Division 2 semifinals against the Tri-Port Eagles this Saturday (Feb. 17) at SEAPARC arena.

The Thunderbirds had a good season in a highly competitive division, finishing in the middle of the pack.

Sooke played Tri-Port (a combination of players from Port Alice, Port Hardy and Port McNeill) three times this year going 0-1-2.

“I think we’re in a good spot. We’ve got a good team. The core of this group has been playing together since they were about seven years old,” said Thunderbirds coach Martin Knowles. “They know how to win, so if they play their game then we should have a good shot.”

Knowles said to win their next game, all of the players need to step up and play their role.

If the Thunderbirds win Saturday’s game, they play the winner of Powell River-Kerry Park series for the Island championship.

“This is going to be one of the hardest games of the season to win,” Knowles said. “We’re matched really tight with Tri-Port. They’re a good team with some strong players. It’s the little things that will win this game, and I’m confident if our guys put their mind to it they can pull off a win.”

The game starts at 5:45 p.m. Premier John Horgan will drop the puck.
