Sooke Celtic FC stormed out of the winter break determined to gain ground in the battle for a playoff berth.

“At this point of the season, every game is the biggest game of the season,” said Sooke Celtic assistant coach Pete McKay.

Mike McKay and Daylon Scheepers helped the team take a big stride in their quest to make the post season with a 2-1 win at home over Nanaimo United on Jan. 26. The win left Sooke Celtic a single point out of second place.

The team is also coming off a 3-0 victory over Nanaimo on Feb. 3 in Jackson Cup tournament play. Devon Austin, Mike Moon, and Ryan Ottesen tallied for Sooke Celtic, and Cody Carter earned the shutout in that contest.

Sooke qualified for the Jackson Cup, which has been around for more than a century, following the team’s move back up to Division 2 this season.

McKay said the team looked forward to competing in the Jackson Cup, which is open to Division 1 and 2 teams, even though the results don’t count in league standings,

“We have a team full of competitors that welcome the opportunity to compete in every tournament or game they play,” McKay said.

Sooke Celtic takes on Saanich Fusion FC at Layritz Park on Saturday, Feb. 10 before their next home game against oak Bay Baysa on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Log at Fred Milne Park for the second round of Jackson Cup play.
