Sooke Celtic FC finds itself in the midst a tight race for top spot as the team approaches the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s winter break.

Although Sooke Celtic is in fourth place with 19 points in Division 2 standings, the top five teams are only separated by five points.

The club tied Saltspring FC two weeks ago 2-2 on the strength of goals by Santiago Villanujeva and Troy Urlacher before coming up short in a 1-0 loss to Saanich Fusion Friday in a game assistant coach Pete McKay said they could have easily won.

“We had a goal called back and then had to play shorthanded after we took a red card,” McKay said. “I didn’t agree with the call, but we hung in until they scored with less than 10 minutes to play.”

He said several Saanich players paid tribute to the outstanding support the team gets game after game, a pattern McKay hopes continues when they take on Campbell River Golden Wings at home on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves at this point with seven games left in the season,” McKay said. “The plan is to focus on one game at a time.”

Sooke Celtic’s final game before the league’s winter break is Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. against Lakehill FC at The Log at Fred Milne Field.
