The Sooke Community Choir is celebrating pop music.

After a successful Christmas season with the Classic Christmas concert series, including a full house performance at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria, the Sooke Community Choir is in full swing rehearsals for its Spring Concert series.

This season’s repertoire consists of pieces that have all been recent musical hits.

The show, called HITS!, brings together fresh music arrangements from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, with a distinctly popular flavour and rock band accompaniment.

Bruce Ruddell, conductor of the Sooke Community Choir, said he wanted to switch things up, adding the performance will be visually interesting with a unique lighting set up.

“It’s going to be a really fun and exciting show,” Ruddell said.

Concert-goers will hear music made popular by Adele, Ed Sheeran, Radiohead, Stevie Nicks, Michael Buble, Moses Hogan, Neil Diamond and The Pentatonix.

“We are even going to hand out some lyrics so people can sing along,” Ruddell said. “Everyone has been working very hard, and we can’t wait to share it with the community.”

The 58-person choir will be joined by three special guests: Mark Owen on percussion, Steve Cross on guitars and pianist Kathy Russell.

Performances take place at the Sooke Community Hall, 2037 Shields Rd. on May 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and May 6 at 2 p.m.

Tickets to HITS! cost $20 and can be bought at the door on the night of the event, online at ticketrocket.co, or at Shoppers Drug Mart in Sooke. Youth under the age of 16 can watch the performance for free.

“You’re not going to want to miss this one. It’s going to be a great time,” Ruddell said.
